In an indication of how competitive the 2008 NHRA Powerade Drag Racing Series is expected to be, three-time defending Top Fuel dragster champion Tony Schumacher and Brandon Bernstein tied in a national preseason poll predicting class winners.

However, Rod Fuller - the driver with the most first-place votes in Top Fuel - finished just two points behind in balloting by 13 voters who follow the series.

TALLMADGE, Ohio -- Summit Racing Equipment, the world’s largest direct mail and Internet supplier of high performance automotive parts, and Kenny Bernstein Racing have reached a new sponsorship agreement for 2008. Sweetwater native David Densmore earns prestigious public relations honor

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - David Densmore... recently was presented the 2008 James P. Chapman Award for excellence in motor sports public relations by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA).

In his 25 years in the PR business, Densmore has represented nine drag racing world champions including Texans Raymond Beadle, Kenny Bernstein, Richard Tharp and the late Lee Shepherd along with Gary Beck, Mark Oswald, the late Gary Ormsby and Tony Pedregon.

Sponsor Hiatus Teams and Drivers Scrambling

The surprising withdrawal of Torco Racing Fuels from race team sponsorship for the 2008 season has many high profile teams and drivers scrambling for new sponsors so they can compete this season.

As quoted in the Peoria Journal Star:

Don Prudhomme lost sponsorship for Funny Car driver Tommy Johnson Jr., who moved to Kenny Bernstein's team, so Prudhomme is only running a Top Fuel car for Larry Dixon this season.

 

Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Matt Smith is looking for work and Pro Stock driver Dave Connolly may start this season on the sidelines, as may Funny Car driver Mike Ashley. (Editor's note, Ashley has since signed a deal with ProCare Rx for 2008.)

Parks passes, Force wrecks, Greg and Jeg score 50th wins in third … – NHRA.com

After 56 years of leading NHRA Championship Drag Racing from its inception into a sporting entity featuring more than 80,000 members worldwide, founder Wally Parks passes away on Sept. 28 at the age of 94. Parks' death is preceded by a scary accident involving John Force and Kenny Bernstein that hospitalizes 14-time champion Force for 23 days at Baylor Medical Center in Dallas.

NHRA.com is spending the last few days of 2007 revisiting the headlines of the year in quarterly installments. While September seemed to produce the most news, July and August also added to the third quarter with racers scrambling to make the first cut-off to the new Countdown to the Championship. Crew chief Mike "Zippy" Neff also earned the spotlight when he was named the fourth driver at John Force Racing, while Ashley Force was named AOL's Hottest Athlete, which earned her a guest appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno...
